Why TVP? A Chief Superintendent’s Perspective on Leadership and Growth
When considering a transfer to a new police force, many factors come into play opportunities for growth, the chance to make a meaningful impact, and the ability to work with a forward-thinking team. Michael’s decision to transfer to Thames Valley Police was sparked by an inspiring encounter with the Chief Constable’s Management Team in 2016. In this blog, Michael shares his experience with TVP, detailing why he chose to transfer, what the force offers, and how it has helped him realise his potential.
Why did you decide to transfer to TVP?
I originally met TVP’s Chief Constable’s Management Team in 2016, whilst I was working for the Metropolitan Police, at a Microsoft event looking at a demonstration of the Contact Management Platform (CMP) development. I was involved at the time in Met’s strategy for digital public contact and it was clear that CMP conceptually presented an innovative approach to contact management.
The opening to transfer to Thames Valley Police arose early the following year when a Superintendent’s process was advertised, and I was excited by the opportunity to work at a senior level in an innovative force outside of London, eager to build on my experiences and deliver for local communities.
What does TVP have to offer?
The breadth of opportunity with significant command roles – Thames Valley Police is the 5th largest force in the UK, with a sizable geography – our local policing structure allows local leadership opportunities, whilst we also have functional roles that give the chance to develop and utilise more specialist skills. Our size means we have a very wide range of roles, with opportunities for movement and development. We are the host force for several regional functions and genuinely take real care of our staff, for example with a posting policy to keep officers within a reasonable commute distance of their home despite the geography we cover.
How do you feel you are realising your potential at TVP?
Firstly, I have had the chance to use skills that I transferred in with – not only my core policing skills, such as driving qualifications and public order, but also some more specialist skills such as in digital policing, change, and project leadership. Having performed two roles as a Superintendent in the force, I was promoted to Chief Superintendent in 2021 and have had the opportunity through that to accredit as a commander for Public Order at the Gold level, Strategic Firearms, Strategic CBRN, and Major Incidents. I have also been able to continue my work with the Jewish Police Association, supporting forces nationally, as well as supporting engagement and matters arising within TVP communities – TVP has really enabled me to add value through diversity.
