Transferring to TVP to realise her potential: Meet Detective Sergeant Maddie

Madeleine DeBuse is a Detective Sergeant within our TVP Digital Investigation and Intelligence team. Maddie, as colleagues call her, started her policing career at TVP, later on joining Surrey Police to continue her journey. When TVP started a new team dedicated to Digital Investigation and Intelligence, she knew transferring back to TVP was the next step in her career.

Why did you decide to re-join TVP?

I am a trained Digital Media Investigator (DMI) and was keen to expand on this role. I knew TVP was making waves in this area, and starting a brand new team dedicated to Digital Investigation and Intelligence. As soon as I became aware of the opportunities available within this new team, I knew this was the right next step for me. I called the Detective Inspector to discuss the role and express my interest, interviewed for the role, and got it, which meant transferring back to TVP.

What does TVP have to offer?

For me, there is a lot of nostalgia. I was permitted to have my old shoulder number, and I got to work with some familiar faces. TVP has allowed me to grow with the new team and promote my digital skills. Providing help and guidance to my colleagues is a great feeling, and it improves our handling of digital enquiries. TVP makes me feel valued with its focus on continuous education, which I believe should be core in any force.

I am fortunate to work in an environment where I can work from home. When I caught Covid last year, which triggered an autoimmune disease, this was a relief. Being able to work from home has really helped me cope with my new circumstances, and TVP has been incredibly supportive. Work is one thing that I do not have to worry about.

How do you feel you are realising your potential at TVP?

I’m a huge nerd with knowledge in areas people often don’t find interesting. This helps me advise officers on the ground, Senior Investigative Officers (SIOs), and Senior Officers on complex crimes. Officers come to me for reassurance and confirmation on their enquiries and I love to work with them. I work with officers from up and down the force and it feels like one big team. The confidence that I can install in officers by being there when needed is indescribable.

What would you say to anyone considering transferring to TVP or re-joining policing with TVP?

It’s important to transfer for the right reasons and to remember the grass isn’t always greener. If you have ambition and drive, you’ll do well at TVP. You get out what you put in. Strive to be the best for yourself and the force, and you’ll go far. I have had zero regrets after having transferred. I absolutely love what I do, who I work with, and what we have achieved as a team and as a force.

In a nutshell, what sets TVP apart from other forces?

As a company, TVP is small enough to care and big enough to make an impact. I believe that TVP is seriously invested in future-proofing digital police with the development of our team, and the focus on continuing education in the field that I work in is essential. The digital space is constantly changing and TVP knows we have to keep up.

DC deBuse has also had an article published on the College of Policing website, during which she shares a shift in the life of a Digital Investigator, working with different teams to ensure digital evidence can be seized, preserved, extracted, and examined. Officers choose to transfer to TVP or re-join policing with TVP for a variety of reasons. For some, it’s our reputation as a forward-thinking and well-organised force, and for others, it’s the opportunity for promotion or specialism, and often we’re just a shorter commute!

Whatever your reason, the knowledge, skills, and experience you bring will be warmly welcomed into the TVP family from day one.
