From Aspirations to Action: Jeremy’s transfer story to TVP

Jeremy is an Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO) in the Protection Group at Thames Valley Police (TVP). After starting his policing career with the Met, Jeremy transferred to TVP in 2015, drawn by the force’s reputation. With over 25 years of service, he has found his calling in protecting VIPs and engaging in critical operations, TVP being a perfect fit for his career aspirations.

  • Current Role: Police Constable – Authorised Firearms Officer (AFO) – Protection Group
  • Age at joining policing: 26
  • Length of Service (in total, including TVP): 25 years

Why did you decide to transfer to TVP?

I joined the Met in 2002, before transferring to TVP in 2015. I had always aspired to work for TVP, as TVP officers have an excellent reputation for being very professional and trained to a high standard, being well respected by officers in other forces.

What does TVP have to offer?

I have worked in many departments and am currently attached to the Protection Group as an AFO. In my opinion, this is one of the best roles TVP has to offer. It is a very privileged role, and I look after VIPs daily. This also includes armed vehicle patrols, assisting ARVs with spontaneous firearm incidents, and specialist operations like changing the guard at Windsor Castle. The management team is very friendly and approachable, which makes for a positive and efficient working environment.

How do you feel you are realising your potential at TVP?

There are numerous roles in the Protection Group to aspire to, including advanced driving, close protection, and operational firearms commander courses.

In your opinion, what sets TVP apart from other forces?

TVP is head and shoulders above other forces regarding welfare and looking after their employees. They have invested a lot of time and effort into recruitment and retention, making officers feel motivated and valued. This ethos contributes to a very healthy working environment.

What would you say to anyone considering transferring to or re-joining policing with TVP?

Short answer: “Do it!” You won’t regret it. I believe that TVP is one of the best employers, and this is evident in the quality of officers. I was in two minds before I applied to transfer, but it was the best decision, and I’ve never looked back.
