Officer Represents Police in World’s Toughest Motorcycle Trial

Thames Valley Police officer, PC Steve Lane, alongside two Metropolitan Police colleagues, recently participated in the renowned Scottish Six Day Trial (SSDT), representing the Police in the “Services Category.” The SSDT, hailed as the toughest motorcycle trial globally, challenges riders with up to 100 miles of rugged terrain each day for six consecutive days – navigating rough moorlands, rocky tracks, and public roads under the unpredictable Scottish Highlands weather.

Unlike motocross or speedway, motorcycle trials focus on skilfully traversing a course with obstacles like logs and rocks, penalising riders for putting their feet down. It’s a test of control and precision, not speed. The SSDT amplifies this with the added challenge of long-distance reliability, pushing the limits of riders’ endurance and their machines’ durability.

PC Lane, a dedicated motorcycle trials enthusiast from a young age, proudly marked the completion of this gruelling event off his bucket list. Competing against an international field of participants, the Police team showcased commendable skill and tenacity, although the Army ‘A’ Team eventually claimed victory in their category. Simply finishing the event stands as a significant achievement in the trials community.

Using his extensive trials knowledge, PC Lane hopes his experience will help with the introduction of off-road bikes for Thames Valley Police. These bikes enhance the force’s capability to perform rural, off-road, and urban patrols – effectively addressing issues like anti-social behaviour, trespassing, and illegal vehicle use in hard-to-reach areas. This initiative already yields positive results, bolstering the force’s efforts to maintain public safety and order.

Congratulations to PC Lane and his team for their remarkable accomplishment and ongoing contributions to our community’s safety!
