From dream to reality: Meet Police Officer Kiran
From an early interest to a fulfilling career, Kiran’s journey into policing has been anything but conventional. Witnessing the exemplary response of the police to a situation involving close friends sparked his interest.
From a young age, Kiran had always been intrigued by the idea of policing, despite having no connections to the profession. It wasn’t until he witnessed the remarkable response of the police in assisting some close friends that he began considering it seriously. With no family or friends in policing to guide him, Kiran embarked on a journey of research and work experience with neighbourhood teams, eventually shaping his path toward becoming a Police Officer.
- Current Role: Police Officer (PC) Incident & Crime Response (ICR)
- Length of Service: 3 years
Tell us a bit about your background, and what attracted you to policing.
I was impressed by the response of the police when helping some close friends of mine. I’d always been interested in policing but had not considered it as a career; none of my family or friends were in the police, and I did not know anyone in the role. I ultimately spent some time researching the role and was fortunate to get some work experience with the neighbourhood teams, which led me to direct my studies to assist me in becoming a Police Officer.
What do you want people to know about what it’s like being an ICR officer?
It seems a bit cliché to say this, but no one day is the same as the next; most days are fun, and some are excellent. It is a complex job with lots to think about, and there are often hard decisions to make that you might not initially be sure how to handle. Your team and your supervisors will support you, so never be afraid to ask questions. As long as you get stuck in and hit the ground running, you will learn quickly.
What is the best piece of advice you can give to the public about staying safe?
Some people don’t call us because they don’t think we will be able to help or it’s not worth the police’s time. If there is an issue or something you don’t feel is right, just call us. If we don’t know it’s happening, we can’t help.
Do you feel supported in your workplace?
I’ve got an excellent team; my colleagues and my supervisors have all been fantastic since day one and continue to be. With the nature of policing, you also find yourself working with a multitude of different teams and departments, and I have yet to encounter one that doesn’t support me as equally as my own team does.
Best moment of your career so far?
I’ve struggled to answer this one simply because there have been several moments that have stood out for me. However, I particularly enjoy a foot chase, and my first one always sticks out for me. I’d been searching for a missing young lad for a number of days who had been evading his carers and the police. I was concerned about this lad due to a number of issues that had been identified around his disappearance. Ultimately, following a sighting, my colleagues and I went to the location, and I ended up in a very Hot Fuzz-style foot chase, ultimately catching him and getting him somewhere safe.
There are many career opportunities in policing. Would you consider any in particular in the future?
I particularly love the role I am in – Incident and Crime Response (ICR). Most officers you encounter when you call 999 will likely be ICR, and ICR officers attend a massive variety of different incidents. There are a number of opportunities in policing, and I have yet to decide exactly what I might like to do in the future, partly because I enjoy ICR so much and don’t want to leave it yet.
What would you say to someone considering policing as a career?
If you don’t like a desk job, you can be in a role where, whilst there is paperwork, the amount of time you can spend out and about doing various activities makes up for it massively.
