A Journey of Service: Insights from PC Natalie
For many, a career in policing is more than just a job—it’s a calling. It’s a profession filled with challenges, rewards, and the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. In this blog, Police Officer Natalie shares her personal reflections on joining the police force, the excitement of daily challenges, and the support received along the way.
Current Role: Police Officer (PC) Incident & Crime Response (ICR)
Age at Joining Policing: 19 years
Length of Service: 16 years
Why Did You Decide to Join Policing?
I started my journey as a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) at the age of 19 in 2008, before becoming a Police Officer at 21 in 2011. I joined the police force because I wanted to catch criminals and help those in need. It was the best decision I ever made, and I couldn’t imagine myself sitting in an office or doing any other job. Every day is different, and that’s what excites me most about this career.
What Do You Love Most About Your Job?
At the beginning of my career, I was naïve about the challenges the police face. I thought officers were only called to respond to the most serious crimes. However, I soon realised that a significant portion of our time is spent dealing with incidents that should be handled by other services. This awareness has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the multifaceted nature of our work.
Do you feel supported in your workplace?
Since joining the police, I’ve gotten married and now have two very young children. I have been fully supported throughout my pregnancies, with adjustments made to my shift pattern. Since returning to work, I’ve also had a flexible working pattern approved, allowing me to balance my professional and personal life effectively.
What Does TVP Have to Offer Compared to Other Workplaces or Forces?
I would highly recommend joining the police, particularly at TVP. There’s a wealth of opportunities available, whether you’re looking for a proactive role or a slower-paced office position. There truly is a department for everyone!
What Would You Say to Anyone Considering Policing?
If you’re thinking about joining the police, I’d say just go for it! Policing isn’t for everyone, but if it’s right for you, you’ll know quickly. You have nothing to lose by giving it a try.
