Thames Valley Police recognised as a ‘Good’ employer in latest HMICFRS inspection

Thames Valley Police has been graded ‘Good’ for attracting, developing and retaining its workforce and creating a diverse and inclusive workplace in the latest HMICFRS PEEL Inspection – a significant improvement that reflects the force’s continued investment in its people and culture.

The report highlights Thames Valley Police as an organisation that supports, develops and values its people. Inspectors found the force is effective at addressing workforce welfare, with officers and staff feeling supported by their supervisors and having access to a wide range of occupational health and wellbeing services.

The grading recognises progress across several areas, including recruitment, leadership development, wellbeing, inclusion and career progression. HMICFRS highlighted the force’s innovative approach to attracting talent, including work with military leavers and targeted engagement with under-represented communities, as well as improvements to its careers website to give potential applicants a realistic insight into life in policing.

Inspectors also recognised the force’s commitment to creating an inclusive workplace. Initiatives such as staff support networks, mentoring opportunities, leadership programmes and listening circles help ensure colleagues feel heard, supported and able to thrive throughout their careers.

The report further acknowledges Thames Valley Police’s strong focus on professional development, highlighting leadership training, career development programmes, specialist learning opportunities and one of the highest rates of professional development reviews in policing.

The force’s wellbeing provision and support for colleagues with disabilities were also recognised as strengths.

For those considering a career in policing, the grading provides independent recognition that Thames Valley Police is committed to being an employer where people can build rewarding careers, develop their skills and be supported to perform at their best.

While the force recognises there is more work to do and remains committed to continuous improvement, this latest assessment demonstrates the progress made in creating a workplace where people are valued, supported and given opportunities to succeed.
