Stepping Up and Standing Out – Proud to Be Thames Valley Police

Sometimes leadership means creating space for others to shine, and that’s exactly what Inspector Sunny has done.

Public trust in policing is earned day by day, action by action. Leaders like Sunny, based in the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead, stand out as shining examples of how Thames Valley Police (TVP) is building a more confident, inclusive, and people-focused service. Their dedication reflects the everyday commitment needed to strengthen trust and serve our communities with integrity.

With 17 years of service in TVP, Sunny has seen the organisation evolve, from force reviews to the merging of local teams and the reshaping of specialist departments. These experiences have shaped his leadership style, which is grounded in purpose and driven by people.

Since becoming a father of two young daughters, Sunny has grown more attuned to the challenges women face. Motivated by this insight, he has taken deliberate steps to address these issues, carrying this awareness into his work and approach.

In his local policing role, Sunny observed a recurring theme where talented officers and staff were holding back, not from a lack of ability, but from a lack of confidence. His response? The Female Confidence Mentoring Pathway, a bespoke programme offering one-to-one mentoring, coaching, and tailored development opportunities.

“This programme helps people see what they’re already capable of.”

So far, over 30 women have taken part. Many have gone on to secure specialist roles and senior positions they once thought out of reach.

Sunny’s work is a living example of TVP’s core values:

  • Fairness and Respect – The programme creates a safe, supportive space for growth.
  • Courage to Do the Right Thing – He challenged norms to open new doors for others.
  • Striving to Improve Every Day – The initiative has grown with feedback and now spans East Berkshire, with a third cohort launching in Slough.
  • Proud to Be TVP – His leadership inspires pride in colleagues and confidence in communities.

His mentoring programme has helped build confidence, boost morale, and open doors for future leaders across the force. The positive ripple effects are clear: officers stepping into roles they once doubted were possible, teams feeling more supported, and a culture that celebrates growth.

This impact has earned Sunny recognition both within and beyond TVP. He’s been honoured with a TVP Leadership Award, celebrated nationally by the British Association for Women in Policing, and even nominated for international recognition, a testament to how powerful inclusive leadership can be.

Sunny believes that people are policing’s greatest asset. He champions the power of language, community connection, and listening. His work brings underrepresented voices to the table and makes mentoring a practical tool for progress.

“Leadership isn’t about being in charge. It’s about lifting others up.”

From helping officers realise their ambitions to showing that real leadership is about doing more for others, Sunny’s work continues to shape a stronger, more confident workforce.
