Thames Valley Police Wins Oscar Kilo Award for Personal Resilience 2024
We are proud to announce that our Force has been recognised with the Personal Resilience Award at the 2024 National Police Wellbeing Service Oscar Kilo Awards. This award recognises the success of the Dynamic Breathwork Programme, which has helped improve the wellbeing and resilience of officers and staff.
The journey started in 2020 when Sam Murray and Miranda Bailey, founders of The Breath Connection, began running 10-day Dynamic Breathwork courses through the Curtis Palmer Programme. In 2021, Chief Inspector Stewart Codling introduced Sam and Miranda to TVP’s Force Wellbeing Team, hoping to make the programme available to the whole workforce.
Since 2023, the Force Wellbeing Team has worked with Sam and Miranda on three key initiatives. These include Dynamic Breathwork and Resilience Breathing sessions, which have supported nearly 450 officers and staff, boosting their mental and physical wellbeing.
The judges at Oscar Kilo praised TVP for its efforts, stating:
“Thames Valley Police, led tirelessly by Chief Inspector Stewart Codling and the force wellbeing team, have shown that they are prepared to listen to what works from staff affected by PTSD and other health challenges by working with the brilliant Curtis Palmer Project. To be able to scale this up is a great
achievement.”
The award was accepted on behalf of Thames Valley Police by Chief Inspector Stewart Codling, who expressed his pride in the team’s
achievements. Stewart said:
“I was utterly proud to represent TVP at the Oscar Kilo Awards on Tuesday evening, sat with wellbeing leads from across UK Policing. Hearing our name read out as winners of the Personal Resilience category was incredible. I have been privileged to have seen the direct impact that Breathwork practices have had on some of my colleagues over the last two years, and this acknowledgment is a wonderful indictment of the innovation, commitment, and care of our Wellbeing Team, notably Gini Simonet.
I wholeheartedly recommend that officers and staff give it a go; it is free for all of TVP and there are daily sessions. Use the link at home or find a quiet space at work; taking time to care for ourselves is vital and will allow us to support our communities better.”
Sam Murray and Miranda Bailey of The Breath Connection shared their thoughts:
“Since its inception, it has been The Breath Connection’s mission to bring Breathwork to the Police Service because we know of the work and life pressures they are under. It is such an honour to receive this award in recognition of the huge efforts made by Gini, Stewart, and TVP to support the resilience of their Officers and Staff.”
Gini Simonet, our wellbeing specialist, said:
“Over the last two years, I have seen how this initiative has improved the mental and physical wellbeing, as well as the resilience, of so many staff and officers across the Force. We have not only the numbers to prove it but also inspiring feedback from participants about how Dynamic Breathwork and Resilience Breathing has changed their lives. Receiving this award from Oscar Kilo is a great honour, and I hope it encourages even more people to try it.”
This award reflects TVP’s commitment to supporting its workforce.
