Kerry’s Journey to Becoming a 999/101 Call Handler
Stepping into a new career is never easy, but for Kerry, joining Thames Valley Police marked the beginning of a rewarding new chapter. In her blog, she reflects on her journey so far: 17 months with the force and the successful completion of her 999/101 call handler apprenticeship, an achievement that earned her a distinction and a renewed sense of confidence and purpose.
How long have you been with Thames Valley Police, and how has your journey unfolded?
I have been with Thames Valley Police for 17 months and have recently completed my apprenticeship as a 999/101 call handler, gaining an accredited qualification. Before this, I worked as a store manager for a charity, a role that was highly physically demanding. I am happy to continue in this role for the time being, as it suits my lifestyle, but I would not rule out the possibility of transferring to another department within the police one day in the future
What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship with TVP?
Through a family member who was already employed by Thames Valley Police, I learned more about the organisation and the role. This encouraged me to change my career path to a less physically demanding position where I could continue to make a difference and support members of the public.
Can you share a memorable moment or achievement during your apprenticeship?
Achieving a distinction in my apprenticeship was an especially memorable and rewarding achievement, as it helped build my confidence and showed me that I was capable of performing to a high standard
How has your mentor or support system contributed to your professional growth?
Both my initial training at Kidlington and the support of my line manager and team in Milton Keynes have played a significant role in my development. I have been fortunate to be surrounded by supportive colleagues who have helped me achieve success and grow in confidence within my role
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship at TVP?
If you are seeking a rewarding role that includes an accredited qualification, I would highly recommend this as a career option. It can also serve as an excellent entry point into the police, offering opportunities to progress into other departments once qualified.
Although I initially thought I might be one of the oldest students in my 50’s, I was pleasantly surprised to find many other mature students on the programme.
