From Apprentice to Call Taker: Mia’s Story
After graduating with a degree in Psychology and Criminology, Mia was eager to find a role where she could put her studies into practice. Joining Thames Valley Police (TVP) in September 2024 offered exactly that opportunity. Now, having completed her apprenticeship with distinction, she reflects on how her academic knowledge has shaped her journey into a meaningful and rewarding policing career.
How long have you been with TVP, and how has your journey unfolded?
I have been with TVP since September 2024, joining the room as a Call Taker in Milton Keynes in October 2024. During this time, I have recently completed my apprenticeship and End Point Assessment, achieving a distinction. My journey so far has been focused on developing my skills, building confidence in the role, and gaining valuable experience in handling a wide range of calls. Completing my apprenticeship has been a significant milestone, and I am proud of the progress I have made as I continue to grow within TVP.
What inspired you to pursue an apprenticeship with TVP?
After completing my degree in Psychology and Criminology at university, I was keen to begin a career where I could apply my knowledge in a practical setting. As this was my first role after graduating, the Thames Valley Police apprenticeship stood out as a valuable opportunity to develop the skills I had learnt in the real world while working, as well as explore a meaningful and rewarding career path. The chance to learn, grow, and contribute to helping the public made the apprenticeship a natural next step for me.
Can you share a memorable moment or achievement during your apprenticeship?
Achieving a Distinction at the end of my apprenticeship was a particularly memorable moment for me. It was the result I had been working towards throughout the programme and reflected the time, effort, and commitment I had put into developing my skills and knowledge. Reaching this milestone gave me a strong sense of achievement and confidence in my ability within the role.
How has your mentor or support system contributed to your professional growth?
The support from my line manager and team in Milton Keynes has been a significant factor in my professional growth and development. They have provided consistent guidance, encouragement, and constructive feedback, which has helped me build confidence and continually improve in my role. They are always approachable, positive, and willing to help whenever it is needed, creating a supportive learning environment throughout my apprenticeship. This has enabled me to develop my skills, strengthen my decision-making, and progress both personally and professionally.
What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship at TVP?
If you are thinking about starting an apprenticeship with TVP, my advice would be to be open to learning and ready to challenge yourself. The role gives you the chance to develop valuable skills, gain a recognised qualification, and play an important part in supporting the public. You will also find yourself surrounded by a close-knit and supportive team, where colleagues quickly become friends, and everyone looks out for one another. There is plenty of support available when you need it, so stay motivated, ask questions, and take pride in the progress you make.
