Transferees & Re-joiners

Transferees

Officers choose to transfer to TVP for a variety of reasons; for some it’s our reputation as a forward- thinking and well-organised force; for others it’s the opportunity for promotion or specialism. Given our vast rural and urban areas, sometimes it’s the greater variety of jobs available at certain ranks and often we’re just a shorter commute! Whatever your reason, the knowledge, skills and experience you bring will be warmly welcomed into the TVP family from day one.

Upon transferring you can be confident you’ll be working with a professional team committed to working together to ensure we deliver on our promises of cutting crime and making our communities safer.

As well as many staff benefits, we provide a wide range of career opportunities, specialist posts, as well as development and promotion prospects. There are annual PC to Sergeant and Sergeant to Inspector promotion boards which are advertised on the TVP and College of Policing websites. Potential applicants can receive updates when applications open by registering their interest via the ‘speculative applications’ tab on the vacancies portal. For further information, contact the promotions team.

“The move to TVP offered me promotional opportunity I felt ready for, having spent 25 years with Bedfordshire. The transition process was smooth and the recruiting team were particularly supportive. Since arriving I have found my feet with the support of my peers and senior leaders and feel the leadership program also worth highlighting as a well-structured positive experience. A really well managed process by a very welcoming force – I can’t fault it.”

– Inspector Dick Doggrell (transferred on promotion to TVP from Bedfordshire police)

Re-joiners

We are encouraging of former officers returning to policing within TVP; whether you left to focus on family, experience a different force or to try a different career altogether, your new experience will be a valuable addition to the team. In addition, with the five year wait to re-join rule now removed, it’s easier than ever to return to policing.

We have made good progress in the past few years with regards to flexible and part-time working opportunities – whilst there is still more work to do, these developments enable us to re-open doors some people may have thought were closed forever.

Eligibility

To be eligible to join as a transferee or re-joiner, you must:

  • currently serve within another Home Office force or have served within a Home Office force
  • have passed the Initial Police Learning and Development Programme (IPLDP)
  • have successfully gained ‘fit for independent patrol’ status (FIP)
  • live within 20 crow miles of one of our main police stations

Application process

The recruitment process will follow a set programme of application, paper sift, competency based interview, vetting (including biometrics), medical checks, reference checks and fitness test. Numerous interview dates are available and we can accommodate a range of dates for medical appointments and fitness tests.

All officers must attend an initial two week induction course at our Police Training Centre in Sulhamstead near Reading. Accommodation is available for those who live outside of travelling distance.

If you require any further information about transferring to Thames Valley Police, please email Transferees@thamesvalley.pnn.police.uk or telephone 0845 2666677 and select transferee recruitment.

Inspector Richard Nicholls - Rejoiner

Inspector Richard Nicholls rejoined TVP in early 2019 having left his role as Neighbourhood Inspector for Wolverton & West in 2010:

“In 2019, the removal of the five year re-join rule afforded me the unique opportunity to return to operational policing at my former rank. Having been out of the service for nine years, I was keen to rejoin in a role which allowed me to contribute more practically towards policing. I am now based on Cherwell & West LPA as an Incident & Crime Response (ICR) Inspector with Team 5 and am extremely grateful to all the team in welcoming me.”
